AGENCY REPRESENTATION!!!

So incredibly excited to announce that I am now represented by Illo Agency! Illo strives to represent quality cultural content, in hope of making mainstream media more inclusive towards global artists and their artwork.

This couldn’t have come with better timing following my recent redundancy. I’m feeling super fortunate to have the helping hand of an amazing agency as I drift into the deeper end of the freelance pool 🏄🏼‍♀️

Animal Kingdom - Pack of cards development

Another glimpse into my playing card project with the third suit, BIRDS!

Each time I complete another card, I have a new favourite, however I was so happy with this set I felt I had to go back to the others and adjust the colour pallets and sizing a little so they are all extra striking but also consistent.

As if deciding to draw 52 different card designs wasn’t long enough, being so particular about the little details is dragging it out even more, but I’m actually reallllly enjoying having such a big project to work on when I have a spare moment between commissions 🐌

KIONII

At the end of May I was made redundant from my in-house illustrator role at KIONII. Despite obviously being upset after being told the news, it made me reflect over the last year at my first in-house role.

Kionii is a black-owned jewellery brand focusing on pendants for the diaspora. Entering the company as white artist, I recognised my privilege and the responsibility I had. I believe it was the existing cultural diversity shown in my portfolio that proved I was suitable for the position, which understandingly included creating illustrations of black and brown skin. Now after 1 year, I feel confident that I can represent cultures different to my own with the right guidance; which I feel, is an incredibly important skill to have, and one I believe I will bring to many different situations later on in my illustration career, as active inclusivity will always be essential.

As well as highlighting the importance of inclusivity, the last year taught me SO MUCH about what it’s like to work in-house, much of which was very interesting but also a real challenge. After a few months at Kionii, I was given the additional responsibility as a marketing assistant, working beneath the marketing manager to create different social media posts for platforms including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest. I learnt a lot through this, much of which I will bring to future freelance situations whether that be marketing personal work or targeting my commissions appropriately for the target audience; however, I also learnt that what I love most about being and illustrator, is simply illustrating. This is because doing all these tasks at once, was occasionally a little overwhelming, and not exactly what I signed up for. The role of course had many things I didn’t initially expect, however not all were stressful. Overall I’m incredibly grateful for the entire experience and I’m fully aware of not only the impact the company had on me, but also the impact I had on the company. Each time I see some of my work, either on their social media, their website or printed merchandise, I’m still in awe that my illustrations are being used in the real world and being seen by so many. Just one of the really exciting new opportunities that Kionii gave me, was to create packaging, something I’ve been keen to do for a while now! To view all my work for whilst at Kionii, click here.

Fortunately I was given plenty of warning regarding my redundancy which helped me prepare, especially for the financial impact. Over the last few months, I’ve been saving, reaching out to creative directors and agencies and just general focusing on my freelance avenues. I hope to use everything I’ve learnt at Kionii to better my freelance journey, onwards and upwards ✨

Always cook on the bright side PART 2

Back in November last year I was contacted by Mia from Always cook on the Bright Side to create an illustration to feature on a T-shirt. It was SUCH a fun collaborative project, so when Mia reached out for a second design to celebrate her one year anniversary, I couldn’t resit.

We had a lot of back and forth with ideas, trying to top the first one that we both loved so much was quite a challenge. Most ideas were pretty complex and down my usual route of chaotic-ness, however the end result ended up being super simple, but works so well.

Despite it’s main intention being for a T-shirt, it looked so good on a business card design too, so we couldn’t resist…
